Homemade Cleaning and Sanitizing Solutions
Cases of emergency are never anticipated and certainly not desirable, but they can happen any time to anyone. And while you can hardly prevent it, you can at least be prepared for when a disaster occurs. Every homeowner should have an emergency kit.
One important question during emergency situations is, how do you sanitize or clean stuff? The answer is: using special cleaners and sanitizing solutions they usually sell in stores. If you’re not used to using chemicals, try our homemade MoveOutCleanLondon Chelsea, mentioned below.
DIY All-purpose Cleaner
Why all-purpose cleaner? Because you can use it for a number of objects and surfaces. All-purpose cleaners are handy and compact. Instead of preparing a separate cleaner for windows, wood, tiles, toilet and others, you can have one that’s easy to carry with you in case of emergency. Here is the recipe:
- ¼ cup of lemon juice
- 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide
- 2 cups of water
- 1 clean bottle
In a plastic bottle mix all ingredients and shake. The spray is ready to use. Put it in your emergency/survival kit but make sure it’s out of reach of children. The key to this recipe is hydrogen peroxide. It is safe to use on the skin. In fact it’s often used to treat open wounds. The product is non-toxic and inexpensive. The recipe takes a few minutes to prepare. The only disadvantage of this cleaner is that it doesn’t last long, which means you need to prepare another one every now and then.
Instead of using hydrogen peroxide, you can also use borax. If kept in a dark and cool place, it can last long.
How to use in emergency:
Spray or apply onto the object you want to clean. Wipe down with a microfiber cloth or a clean rag.
In case of emergency you never know what you’re going to need. But there are some survival must-haves and a sanitizer is among them. Why sanitizer? In cases of earthquakes or floods or even fire, you never know how much time you’re going to spend in this situation. You’ll need food, some clothes and other stuff. But when disasters happen, hygiene is more than crucial. You need to be handy with a sanitizing solution. Foods like fruit and vegetables need to be sanitized before consumption. Also, you need to wash your hands. In any event, a sanitizer is necessary, so here is how you can make one:
- 1 teaspoon gel of aloe vera
- 3 oz. water (filtered)
- 10 to 20 drops essential oils (rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, clove and cinnamon)
- Clean spray bottle or dispenser
Mix all ingredients and shake. That’s it. Always shake before use. Essential oils will add a nice aroma to this sanitizer. This recipe is non-toxic and natural.
How to use in emergency:
Gently shake the bottle and spray onto your hands or a surface. Rub well. If you want to sanitize vegetables and fruits, spray them one by one and wipe down using a clean rag or cloth. Note: vinegar is a great alternative. You can quickly clean your produce by spraying a little vinegar on it and rubbing.
